Best Laptops for Adobe Premiere Pro in 2022

Adobe Premiere Pro logo When it comes to video editing, Adobe Premiere Pro remains one of the most used pieces of software on planet Earth. Thanks to its flexible architecture and rock-solid reliability, Premiere Pro is still the go-to software for creating movies, music videos and whatnot.

Needless to say, it does require a hefty amount of horsepower to get the job done.

So if you’re in the market for a laptop that can edit videos in Premiere Pro smoothly, you’ll be looking for one that can deliver high performance with demanding tasks. Fortunately, there are plenty of options on the market right now – with great performance across wide range of price points. I’ve collected all the information in one place to help you make an informed decision. What are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

TL;DR

Requirements for a Adobe Premiere Pro laptop

Major Graphics card

gpu rtx laptop

This time, I’m talking about optimizing your laptop for one of the most resource-hungry software programs in existence – Adobe After Effects. It’s one of the best video editing programs around, but it’s also an extremely demanding application on your hardware.

The short answer is that the RTX 3080 and Quadro RTX 5000 are hands down the best laptops for Adobe Premiere Pro on the market. The more practical solution is to go with the more affordable RTX 3070, which is still more than capable of running this heavyweight app smoothly. But be careful if you want to buy an entry-level GPU for this purpose. Anything below GTX 1660 Ti will not be able to provide working exprience anywhere near smooth.

Nvidia card variants

I should mention that to keep matters simple, I’ve kept some Nvidia card variants out of the picture. These series stay in-line with their original models with a few minor expected differences:

  • Max-Q cards are ~15% slower (except RTX 30s)
  • Ti and Super models are ~15% faster than base models
  • Founders Edition cards are not significantly different from regular cards

Recommendations

I recommend the RTX 3070 for this specific application. It has plenty of horsepower to provide a smooth working experience, while costing less than other cards that are more powerful. If you only seeking for the best of the best – go with the RTX 3080, which is currently the fastest card in the line. Something like GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 3060 should be only considered as the bare minimum required.

Major Memory

ram memory editing

The more RAM you have, the more applications you can run simultaneously without swapping to disk, which can significantly improve performance. This is why Adobe Premiere Pro experts recommend at least 32GB of RAM for entry-level After Effects users.

A laptop’s processor and graphics card are both important considerations when deciding what kind of performance you want. But there’s one aspect that needs your attention above all else: the RAM. That’s because it has the fewest configuration options, so it’s one of the easiest aspects to get right. You should try to get as much as possible, but be careful not to overpay for something that doesn’t matter much.

Minimum (16 GB)

Though I won’t rule out an 8GB laptop if you’re on a tight budget, that doesn’t mean I’ll recommend it either. First of all, I’ll mention that you could get away with an 8GB RAM laptop if you plan on upgrading within your warranty period. But I wouldn’t recommend doing this – 16GB is still an okay amount for most of Adobe Premiere Pro users. You could even go lower if your work consists only of basic video editing and you don’t mind sacrificing some speed for economy.

Recommended (32 GB)

For Adobe Premiere Pro users looking for maximum performance – get 32 GB! If there’s any area where “more is better” is true – it’s here. And while I’m not looking forward to shelling out the extra cash myself, I know that if I ever needed a new laptop in the future – it would be well worth the investment!

Major Processor

cpu video editing

Picking the right processor for video editing can be tricky. The key here is to pick a CPU that’s powerful enough to handle the processing tasks while also maintaining an adequate level of performance for editing.

Requirements

To get started, you’ll need to think about what your workstation is used for and what your workload will be like. For example, if you’re doing basic editing on 4K footage, you’ll need a processor with at least 8 cores, but you won’t need more than 16 threads. If you’re doing more advanced color correction or grading on 4K footage, then you’ll need at least 12 cores and 24 threads. Also, Adobe states that Premiere Pro and After Effects benefit from CPU clock speeds of 3.2 GHz or higher.

Recommendations

A good place to start is with one of the following processors:

  • Core i5 10300H or Ryzen 5 5600H – minimum recommended processor for video editing
  • Core i711800H or Ryzen 7 5800H – mid-range option for general video editing
  • Core i9-11900H or Ryzen 9 5900HX – best for advanced color correction and grading on 4K footage
TL;DR
  • choose the right processor for video editing by picking one that is powerful enough for your workload and your hardware
  • for basic editing on 4K footage, any processor with at least 8 cores will do
  • for advanced color correction and grading on 4K footage, you’ll need at least 12 cores and 24 threads
