CyberLink PowerDirector PowerDirector is one of the best consumer/professional video-editing software. It’s available on Windows and Mac. It comes in two different ways – One-time paid version (20 is the latest) and a 365 version, which is the same, but paid by monthly or yearly subscription.

I like to use it to edit videos and post them on my Youtube channel, but that isn’t the only thing it’s good for. I use PowerDirector to produce videos for my social media and advertisements. In my opinion, it’s simply the best option for the money (at least if you’re using Windows).

Unfortunately, like many other pieces of software, finding a solid laptop for video editing is quite difficult. Video editing takes up a lot of resources – much more than photo editing. You’ll need at least an Intel Core i5 processor and at least 8 GB of RAM to expect a smooth experience. I’m going to touch upon this point in more detail below. It doesn’t have to be a dedicated machine, but hardware requirements for video editing and gaming are just not quite the same. Of course, top of the line laptop will manage to do both, but if your budget is restricted and your main goal is content creating – try staying reasonable. Fancy GPUs may just not be something you really need, especially if you’re just a beginner in this field.

CPU is very important for CyberLink PowerDirector. In other words, it’s a major factor that determines how smoothly your projects flow. It also influences how fast you can render videos.

Requirements

In order to recommend the best CPU for CyberLink PowerDirector, we need to understand your personal needs and habits. Simply put, almost any laptop can run PowerDirector itself, but I guess it’s safe to assume that’s not your goal. Content is the key. The bigger your projects and the more rendering it does – the more powerfull hardware you gonna need. That includes a CPU, GPU, RAM and main storage. All of these components have to work together to make your laptop do what you want it to do. So that being said, working on a laptop with Intel i5 or Ryzen 5 might be just enough for you if you plan to work on medium sized projects without too heavy rendering. But if your plans are bigger and you’re working professionaly and using resolutions like 4K, then I’d recommend going with Intel i7 or Ryzen 7. Next step is Intel i9 and Ryzen 9, but these may be pricy and come only in high-end premium laptops.

Recommendations

So now that we know what kind of CPU is required for CyberLink PowerDirector, let’s talk about some recommendations. For basic use – i5-1135G7 should be sufficient enough. It’s the lowest priced CPU that’s currently available on the market and can handle most projects just fine without stuttering or lagging too much. The next step up would be Intel Core i7-11800H which is around 25% faster than the i5-1135G7. A true enthusiast or professional user would might consider an Intel Core i9-10885H or AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, but difference between these and Intel Core i7-11800H is not that significant.

CyberLink PowerDirector – Performance

For PowerDirector, it’s not as straightforward as some other. That’s because the GPU isn’t only helping rendering videos – it’s also used to handle features like color correction and camera mapping.

Middle tier graphics card might just be enough for regular users. But if you using CyberLink PowerDirector professionaly, you may not stop there and go for something more powerfull to get your work done in time.

Medium-level GPU

The GTX 1650 is a fine choice if you don’t need anything more than basic video editing with few transitions and color correction effects.

The RTX 3060 is perfect for those who want more – it’s an excellent value for your money. I wouldn’t recommend going much lower than that due to its higher performance compared to GTX 1650/1660 Ti and its support for more features that are hard to get going on cheaper cards.

High-end GPU

If you’re an intermediate or professional video editor, then you’ll want to get a high-end graphics card. At this point, I’d recommen going with professional grade GPUs (Nvidia Quadro series) instead of gaming ones. Time is your biggest value and these cards could help you save some of it by rendering 3D videos with various features much faster.

I’d say newer generation professional Nvidia Quadro GPUs are the best options if money is not a problem.

Your most basic need is 8 GB of RAM. CyberLink PowerDirector will run, but it definitely wont bring you too far. That said, I’d recommend buying laptop with 8 GB of RAM only if your budget is super tight.

For most people, 16 GB will be the sweet spot. It’s not only enough for running PowerDirector, but also most other apps without feeling like they’re using up all your system resources.

A recommended option for professionals is 32 GB of RAM. That will let you run multiple applications simultaneously and big heavy projects in CyberLink PowerDirector (365 and 20).

Finally, if you work on CyberLink PowerDirector (365 and 20) professionaly and your laptop is going to be your main work tool, consider investing in 64 GB to future-proof your laptop, because more memory will always come in handy, especially when software gets more and more demanding.

The quality of your laptop display has a significant impact on your ability to work with video, images, and graphics. But again, if your goal is working on 1080p projects, getting a laptop with 4K display is just overkill. Fortunately, there are many options out there to choose from.

Minimum display specs for video editing

A minimum usable display should have an FHD resolution. And you won’t find any modern laptop display with resolution lower than that. Contrast ratio is also important, so you should look for laptops with a high contrast ratio. Additionally, make sure the display has a brightness of at least 300 cd/sq. m.

Best display specs for video editing

A top-of-the-line laptop should have an OLED panel with 4K resolution. Furthermore, it should have a brightness of 400 cd/sq. m. or higher.

As for storage, picking a laptop for working with CyberLink PowerDirector isn’t different from picking one for any other need. I would never recommend buying laptop with a HDD, unless it’s paired with additional SSD and you get some kind of exceptionally good deal. If you want to play it safe, go with a 512 GB SSD. You can get by with that if you’re not planning on editing high-quality videos or capturing any 4K footage. However, if you want to take your video editing seriously, then I recommend getting at least 1 TB SSD – it’s the most popular laptop storage size, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. And even if you have no idea what you’ll be doing in the future, 1 TB should be somewhat enough of space for all of your needs. But choosing storage size is just a question of your budget, the more – the better.

Get 2 TB SSD is if you can afford it. That simple. On the other hand, the great thing about it is that you can always get more storage. If your laptop comes with extra slots, you can get an additional drive inside or if it doesn’t, you can always attach an external one. So don’t worry too much about capacity and focus on buying what fits your budget best.
